A leader of the United Luisita Workers Union (ULWU) at the Cojuangco family-owned Hacienda Luisita sugar estate in Tarlac province was shot dead at 12:30 a.m. on Friday.

Tirso Cruz, director of the ULWU, was the first leader of the union who was felled since the year-old strike at the estate was resolved in December last year, according to Roman Polintan, chair of the militant Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) in Central Luzon.

According to Polintan, Cruz was walking home when assailants ambushed him in his village Pando in Concepcion town, Tarlac.

The victim, who is also a barangay kagawad (village councilman), had just left a Roman Catholic chapel where a “pabasa” (Lenten reading of the Passion of Christ) was being held.

Cruz died on the spot.
